課程概述

都市是當代多數人類生活的首要環境,也經常被視為人類問題的根源,又是解答之所繫。我們應該如何理解都市、分析城市,擘劃及創造更好的都市生活環境,是學術界和實務界的重大任務。十九世紀末,出於對貧窮、擁擠和公衛的關切,興起了都市調查與規劃倡議。廿世紀初期芝加哥大學的都市社會學派,開啟了都市民族誌和人類生態學的雙傳統。1970至1980年代的新都市社會學(包括新韋伯派和新馬克思主義)現身,加以女性主義觀點、文化轉向、全球城市論,還有深受列斐伏爾觀點影響的空間生產和空間修補概念,西方都市研究已累積了漫長且多樣的傳承。然而,2000年代以後,仍有許多新的都市研究視角迸發,展現出人類都市經驗的持續進展,促使學界不斷創新理論和概念以利掌握變化。
本課程旨在介紹晚近國際學界有關都市性質及分析取徑的新觀點,包括行星都市論(planetary urbanism)、拼裝都市論(assemblage urbanism)、後殖民都市論(postcolonial urbanism)、尋常城市(ordinary cities)與小城市(small cities)研究、南方城市(global south cities)研究,以及比較都市論(comparative urbanism)等。這些不同取徑和觀點之間的辯論與整合,也是課程研討的焦點。
 

課程目標
本課程目標在於令修課者(一).掌握當代都市理論的重要流派、概念和辯論;(二)通過閱讀、報告、討論和實際課題研究,學習運用既有理論概念來探討當代都市議題;(三)通過實際都市議題的經驗研究,摸索與既有理論取向對話的可能性。 
課程要求
■課程要求:
盡力閱讀課程材料,勇於發問,勤於出席。修習者的投入與表現,對本課程能否順利運作非常重要。本課程採取講演和討論課(seminar)並行方式,每次上課由教師講授和提示重點,並由參與者分配導讀該週的閱讀材料,每篇文章報告時間,必須控制於十五分鐘,盡量留時間發問和討論,探討能跟理論概念對話的經驗議題。報告者必須分發書面提要(必須包含三百字以內之摘述,主要論點和論證邏輯之說明【配合論證圖示】,以及評論和問題)。
沒有分配到當週閱讀材料導讀的同學,則需繳交針對某一篇或全部閱讀材料的讀書心得和提問,至少一頁。旁聽的同學,不需分配閱讀材料的導讀,也不必繳交作業,但是必須每堂課繳交讀書心得和提問。
本課程的設計份量,需要修課者在課堂外花費五倍以上的時間,也就是3 X 4=12個小時,包括閱讀教材、與同學討論、撰寫摘要或讀書心得及提問的時間。
■摘要寫作要點:
書面摘要必須於首頁列明報告文獻(APA格式)、日期、報告人,先有三百字摘要,述明整篇文章的問題意識和主要論點。然後是經過消化的、條理分明的內容概述。換言之,不宜逐段摘譯,最好是整理出文中討論的主要問題,以及作者對這些問題的回答或爭辯,建議以圖表方式整理出主要的論證架構,也可以搭配一些圖片,譬如說作者照片、書影或文中提到的人物和事件圖片。如果直接引述文中語句或段落,必須以不同字體清楚標示,並加註頁碼。最後,必須針對文獻內容提出問題,或是可供延伸討論的經驗議題。
■作業要求與評分:
1.書評:針對與本課程主題有關之專書或一系列相關論文,撰寫3000至5000字之書評。本作業佔15%。須先與授課教師討論所欲評論之專書或系列文章。
2.期末報告:運用本課程提到的都市研究取向和概念,研究特定都市議題,可以是經驗性課題,也可以是理論性探討。這份報告將分為三個階段繳交。第一階段是提出研究計畫書,針對研究主題提出初步觀察、提問,以及初步文獻回顧和方法說明(3頁以內)。第二階段是已經完成田野或案例考察及初步分析的初稿,至少一萬字。第三階段是完稿,也就是經過教師批閱和建議,提出完整分析的修正稿,一萬五千字左右。論文寫作必須符合學術規範,包含中英文標題、中文摘要與關鍵詞,以及符合學術規範之書目格式(參考《台灣社會學刊》或《建築與城鄉研究學報》等學術期刊的格式)。每階段分別佔學期成績的5%、20%、10%,合計為35%。
3.平時表現(含出席狀況、參與討論、口頭報告和書面摘要表現等),佔50 %。
4.各項報告須準時繳交,遲交一天將扣3分,但以扣除30分為上限;期末報告完稿不得遲交。繳交時間明定於各週進度表。

針對與本課程主題有關之專書或一系列相關論文,撰寫3000至5000字之書評。本作業佔15%。須先與授課教師討論所欲評論之專書或系列文章。

期末報告 
35% 
運用本課程提到的都市研究取向和概念,研究特定都市議題,可以是經驗性課題,也可以是理論性探討。這份報告將分為三個階段繳交。第一階段是提出研究計畫書,針對研究主題提出初步觀察、提問,以及初步文獻回顧和方法說明(3頁以內)。第二階段是已經完成田野或案例考察及初步分析的初稿,至少一萬字。第三階段是完稿,也就是經過教師批閱和建議,提出完整分析的修正稿,一萬五千字左右。論文寫作必須符合學術規範,包含中英文標題、中文摘要與關鍵詞,以及符合學術規範之書目格式(參考《台灣社會學刊》或《建築與城鄉研究學報》等學術期刊的格式)。每階段分別佔學期成績的5%、20%、10%,合計為35%。
